Gypsies living on illegal camps are getting regular rubbish collections even though they do not pay council tax.
In contrast, ordinary families who do pay the tax are seeing weekly bin collections scrapped and face fines if they put their rubbish out on the wrong day.
Campaigners last night blasted the Government for showing “favouritism” to travellers.
Matthew Elliott, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “This is a slap in the face for everyone who pays tax and gets only poor services in return.”
Doretta Cocks, of the Campaign for Weekly Waste Collections, said: “There are people suffering from poor fortnightly services even though they pay council tax, this is just not fair.”
The gypsies are being let off payments because the Valuation Office Agency, the council tax inspectorate, has refused to tax-band their sites unless the travellers have been resident there for at least 12 months.
Ministers admit even illegal traveller sites are liable for council tax. Yet without a banding, councils are unable to charge tax on the sites. By moving on after 12 months, the travellers never have to pay.
Despite the non-payment of council tax, a Government report unearthed by the Tories has ordered councils to “provide skips or rubbish bags at unauthorised encampments” and “quick action should therefore be taken to remove any rubbish” from them.
Eric Pickles, Tory local government spokesman, said: “Hard-working families are struggling to stay on the housing ladder and pay their soaring council tax bills in a tough economic climate. By contrast, many travellers are being given special treatment.” The VOA’s policy towards gypsies contrasts with its planned council tax revaluation in England, which could see families facing increased charges if they have improved their home or have scenic views.
The Daily Express has also revealed how thousands of owners could be forced to sell their land to create permanent campsites for 25,000 travellers. Work on some of the proposed 7,500 extra pitches will get the go-ahead within weeks under a controversial £97million scheme. Mr Pickles said: “Town halls are being bullied into using compulsory purchase powers to seize land.
“Vital planning rules, like Green Belt protection, are being ripped up. The last straw is for travellers to be given a green light not to pay council tax.”
A Local Government Assoc-iation spokesman said: “Councils do not give special treatment to any group. Gypsies and travellers must carry the same rights and responsibilities as local residents. Everyone should pay council tax for services they use.”
It is interesting to see how socialist minded government officials go about growing their compliant voter population. It begins with subtle appeals to sensibility, then takes on the form of political correctness. Once that sets in the socialists begin to make demands of their ethnic majority. Work hard and pay taxes so that foreigners may enjoy the rights and privileges of British society without being asked to work. This of course ensures that the future vote of any minority falls safely into the lap of the left. Nobody, whose entire life is financed by the work of others, is going to vote for a party which might jeopardize such a situation. When those of us, who are forced to work hard to benefit others begin to dissent, the charges of racism and bigotry start to fly. As we have become hypersensitive to being labelled as such, we continue to tow the party line and submit to the will of multiculturalism. It is truly a vicious cycle which benefits the left. I do; however, see the light at the end of the tunnel.
More and more of us are beginning to see the truth behind the left's "love" of the little guy. They care for nothing but authoritarian rule. Those of us who recognized this Marxist style of government early on have been charged with being racists and bigots; but more and more of our fellow countrymen are starting to see the light because the left is severely overplaying thier hand. What started as a subtle Gramscian tactic of creeping socialism has turned into outright cultural suicide and self-loathing disdain for ones one heritage. I dont think that we as a people are ready to just hang up our culture and submit ourselves into slavery for the purpose of multiculturalism; especially when multiculturalism includes everyone except caucasians. It has been made absolutely clear that our sole purpose in Europe is to provide for the wellbeing of those who in the future will replace us as a mindless voting majority.
It, I am comforted in knowing, will never happen. We built our countries, poured sweat and blood into our countries, and I for one will be damned if we are going out without a fight. We as a proud people will not be ground down into the lowest common denominator; we were not put upon this earth to fail. We will triumph.
