An open letter to the citizens of Greece;
I am writing this letter in hopes of appealing to your sensibility as members of one the most important nations and civilizations in Europe, if not the entire world. What you are witnessing now is the eclipse of evil over the light of civilization. The streets are filled with those who wish to plunge your nation into the abyss of anarchy and regress into tribalism. The question of how the whimsical nature of these beasts can potentially usurp 3,000 plus years of prosperity and proud heritage is a difficult one but must not be avoided. Furthermore, the question of which way to go, and how best to maintain order deserves an immediate answer.
A reader of mine recently reminded me of a quote from a great man and rhetorician of Greek antiquity. I do not believe that he could have ever realized just how transcendent and necessary his words would be in these times of peril.
"Our democracy is destroying itself because it abused the rights of freedom and equality, because it taught the citizens to consider insolence a right, lawlessness as freedom, the audacity of words as equality and anarchy as bliss...."
Isocrates (436B.C-338 B.C)
Insolence, lawlessness, anarchy, and the perceived right to destroy the work and successes of fellow men are indeed not freedoms but instead crimes of the worst nature. Equality never meant to enshrine the Marxist ideology that when one man suffers, all must follow suit. Freedom was established so that the best of us, the most industrious and hardworking, could not be held back; it was a means of allowing the peasant class to be able to control their own destiny and prosper to the best of their ability. With this freedom comes responsibility. Patriotism, sacrifice, hard work, and discipline are virtues which must be nurtured in order to maintain a society and continue its ascension as a light amongst darkness. When the citizens descend into demanding those things which they have not earned, then lawlessness and a crumbling of society is sure to follow. Society becomes the mob.
What you see today is the true face of the mob. The fact that the masses are even considering a realignment of government policy to facilitate those criminals who find it righteous to attack their fellow citizens and destroy what you have worked so hard to build is simply damning to Greece as you know it. How on earth could any civilized people take into serious consideration the political aspirations of an uneducated, barbaric generation, whose only achievements have been to pierce their noses, take drugs, regard pop singers as philosophers, and set fires to your beloved cities? Anarchist music, graffiti, crime, violence towards fellow citizens, and moral depravity are not signs of progress; they are telltale warnings of the impending death of society.
If and when the call for early elections does come, you must take into consideration the survival of Greece and its chances for being the model state it has been and should be for the years and centuries to come. You must make the decision to retake your streets and promote a true sense of nationalism and duty amongst your young generation. You know as well as I that prosperity can only come as a result of a society which respects the rule of law. Though these criminals may be your sons, daughters, nieces and nephews, you alone must make the decision to stand up for what is right and decent; you must make the decision to smash this criminal behavior. What they demand is immoral, destructive, unsustainable, devoid of reality, and spells the end of Greece. I implore you to take control of your destiny and stand up for decency with all your might. The light that is Greece may not burn as brightly as it once did, but it has never been extinguished. I find no reason why, together, the citizens of Greece cannot resurrect the grand flame of the past and continue its proud traditions well into the future.
